Certificate of Appreciation for Volunteering and Reflection
Certification of Appreciation
Professional Development
This certificate of appreciation is based on the volunteer hours I spent at the school of Sacred Heart in Grand Rapids. I was involved with an after school program that gave each student enrolled a mentor or tutor to help with not only homework, but to assist into further developing their skills in specifically mathematics and reading.
Every Wednesday afternoon my freshman and junior year of college, I went to Sacred Heart and mentored a different student. Each experience was different because each student learned differently and the way I taught had to incorporate the student’s uniqueness with learning. I was able to develop my knowledge of how different lessons can be taught. For instance, one student learned multiplication best through multiplication flash cards while another one learner better by making arrays and counting the tiles. I was able to work with students from all different age levels and academic levels which gave me an insight on what to expect in my own classroom with similar students in the same categories. Each student was completely different from the last, and I enjoyed spending time with each one and learning about whom they were and how they learned because I gained a new perspective and appreciation for the uniqueness of learning. I was able to motivate these students by incorporating learning into a fun and entertaining game like hangman. When my students struggled with spelling words, I would play hangman using their spelling words as the words they needed to guess; they did not realize they were actually working on spelling, but were able to learn anyways.
Through this experience I have gained knowledge and skills which I will be able to use with all of my students because they are all going to be unique and learn differently like the students I mentored at Sacred Heart.
