Probably one of the most effective and beloved comedy series ever.
filipemanuelneto5 March 2024
For people like me, who grew up in the 90s, Mr. Bean is certainly one of the best and most nostalgic pieces of television ever made, as well as being one of the best series made in Europe. It's really hard to think that there were only fourteen episodes when it seems, to our eyes, that there were several dozen. Without great visual artifices, without particular care for the scenery (Bean's apartment is never exactly the same between episodes and there are other subtle changes), with the soundtrack reduced to a minimum (the song used at the beginning and end, "Ecce homo quer est faba") without concerns about verisimilitude, all the episodes do what they set out to do: make everyone laugh.

Each episode lasted about half an hour and could be watched by any type of person, even on a lunch break for someone whose work requires them to have lunch outside the home. The protagonist, Bean (we will never know if he ever had a name other than "Mr."), is a perfectly ordinary man, but much more idiotic than most people (except, perhaps, a notable portion of the employees). Public), and the various episodes clearly show the mishaps and embarrassing situations that happen in his life. And we laughed... but who, after all, has never experienced at least one situation so bizarre or embarrassing that it could have been carried out by Bean?

The actor who gave body and soul to the character is the inimitable Rowan Atkinson. He is, without a doubt, a good actor, but Bean was that character that brought out the best in the actor, that character that he conceived and tailored to his abilities and talent, and that can never be played decently any longer. Nobody. And as almost always happens in cases like these, the character stuck to the actor as if she were a second skin, and it is understandable that Atkinson preferred to reform her, even though her popularity seems to prevent an absolute reform: Bean still appears, in a very punctual way, whether for a commercial advertisement or for a special appearance, as happened at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. After all, along with the late Elizabeth II and the many faces that were once James Bond, Bean is certainly the most recognizable and loved Brit in the world.

There is only one Bean. There will only ever be one Bean.
Amthermandes25 October 2023
Rowan Atkinson is the British version of Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. A master in the 90's at physical comedy.

Mr. Bean is an oddball who almost never speaks, and who might be so socially awkward in public, that many viewers are led to believe he is an actual alien from another world. Whether or not that's true, and despite his shenanigans, Mr. Bean brings the world so much laughter and joy.

One of the precursors to modern "awkward sitcoms," Mr. Bean puts himself in awkward situations that could have initially been easily avoided. He is a simpleton with simple tastes, but does seem to enjoy splurging now and then. He enjoys his friend Teddy's company, enjoying new things, tweed jackets, and tormenting his 3-wheeled adversary.

It's situational comedy at its ridiculous finest. Many will find the humor to be dated. Many modern audiences who likes to multitask while watching may be frustrated because the comedy is so visually focused.

But one thing can be said about this show. There can never, EVER be a duplicate, reprise, sequel, prequel, origin story, or spinoff. This show is so unique, it would not survive outside its original series run. This is like a rare, delicate truffle to be enjoyed periodically, knowing that nothing can ever be quite like it.

Beyond Perfection
coles_notes17 October 2023
Watching through again for what must be at least the tenth time since my childhood, we follow the titular Mr. Bean, a rarely talking buffoon, and all the messes he gets into as he tries shopping, taking tests, or simply going for a swim. Much physical comedy, Rowan Atkinson is absolutely perfect and hilarious, I was roaring almost every episode and smiling throughout. There's just so much charm to his stupidity and bumbling, but also so much cleverness in the performance. It was certainly trendsetting, if not set the gold standard for its type of comedy in its era. If you haven't seen Mr. Bean then please go change that as soon as possible, I can pretty much guarantee it'll be a fantastic time. Would highly, highly recommend.

Loved this show as a kid and decided to rewatch it, and oh boy i do not regret doing so. Its a really funny comedy about a stupid guy, but not the annoying stupid, just the funny stupid. I lowkey loved every second of the series. A really fun and entertaining watch. Hes just so quirky omg i love mr bean. Has some flaws, but theyre very minor and ate overshadowed by the sheer quality of the show. Its actually one of those shows that are actually enhanced by a mute protagonist, like i swear a guy which only makes noises is 100x funnier than a guy that talks and gives quirky one liners if they were in the same situation.

Physical comedy Masterpiece, however...
jordymadueno9 October 2023
Concept: The brilliance lies in the idea of such a peculiar character in typical British settings of the time.

Plot: There is no overarching narrative that connects all the episodes. However, each episode does follow certain narrative patterns such as scene contextualization, problem development, and even low points for the main character. In short, it's a rather minimal and straightforward version of a usual plot.

Characters: There is only one character, Mr. Bean himself, who at first glance may not seem outstanding or recognizable. However, he has such a unique personality and attitude that he becomes iconic. From his mumbling, facial expressions, monotonous clothing, walking style, and more. Undoubtedly, it's a great character that Atkinson managed to build.

Complexity: The character itself is not complex. Starting with the fact that there is no backstory explaining where he came from or where he wants to go. Because of this, there is no character development. He remains the same from the first episode to the last, and although it offers a certain consistency, it becomes monotonous and loses appeal after each episode. Fortunately, it was a short series.

Performance: Rowan Atkinson is a genius. Not only for writing and developing such a unique character but also for portraying it perfectly. There is no doubt that his mastery of body language is what allows us to enjoy his work regardless of the country we are in. I must say it's not a primitive or childish performance; it requires great preparation to know how to define the ideal rhythm to entertain and make the audience laugh.

Aesthetics: It's not particularly outstanding. It simply reflects the English context of that time. Moreover, it uses a typical English style of presenting scenes with a raw, almost unaltered aesthetic of what reality would be.

Sound: Nothing in particular, perhaps the most relevant aspect is the sound effects to help highlight Mr. Bean's actions.

Best movie I have seen

In a world of ever-changing comedy trends, there's one character who has managed to stand the test of time and continue to bring uproarious laughter to audiences of all ages: the iconic Mr. Bean. Created and brilliantly portrayed by the incomparable Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean is a true masterpiece of comedic characterization, and his antics never fail to leave viewers in stitches.

Atkinson's genius lies in his ability to turn the simplest, most mundane situations into side-splitting spectacles of physical and visual comedy. With his distinct lack of verbal communication, Mr. Bean relies on his facial expressions, body language, and a few well-timed grunts to convey his thoughts and intentions. This universal language of laughter transcends cultural barriers, making Mr. Bean's humor accessible to a global audience.

The beauty of Mr. Bean's comedy is its timelessness. Whether you're watching his classic episodes from the 1990s or discovering his antics for the first time today, the laughter remains as fresh and genuine as ever. From his misadventures at the dentist or the museum to his encounters with mundane tasks like shopping or preparing a meal, Mr. Bean turns everyday life into a chaotic, uproarious adventure.

But it's not just the physical humor that makes Mr. Bean a beloved character. The character's childlike innocence and naivety, coupled with his unwavering optimism, endear him to audiences. Despite the chaos he often creates, his actions are never malicious, and his genuine heart shines through in the most unexpected ways. This dynamic blend of slapstick and heartfelt moments creates a multi-dimensional character that's both hilarious and surprisingly relatable.

Hilarious sitcom

Warning: Spoilers
Rowan Atkinson plays the title charcther Mr Bean, a childish man who can't really speak properly as he mutters. Throughout the show he faces alot of hilarious encounters from dressing up in drag,to getting his volkswagon car destroyed,to getting food poisoning to even going on trips with his Teddy bear.

No one could ever replace Rowan Atkison as the title charcther as he went on to do movies based on his charcther and even a short lived animated series based on the same name. There is so many episodes that had me laughing so hard, one episode I do remember was the one where he was at a hotel and was locked out of his room with just a exit sign to cover himself up .

Watch it on Netflix.

Outstanding comedy series
cherylkyrandia16 April 2023
Rowan Atkinson is a legend amongst comedians. The comedic timing that Rowan Atkinson pulls off is nothing short of perfection. It was interesting to watch the Mr Bean Ultimate Disaster movie and see him suddenly speak - something I wasn't previously used to. The lack of script isn't a bad thing in this show. This is a show that demonstrates comedy can be told through action and a few visual moments. Mr. Bean was a defining part of my childhood in terms of consuming comedy content. I feel like kids should be taught the origins of comedy with this show having its own chapter in a book! Definitely watch this if you haven't seen it!

Funny as a kid, funny as an adult.
TusharViv3 December 2022
A true masterpiece. A timeless classic which can be watched no matter how old you are or where you're from. The humour relies on the character being "wacky" but they pull it off without it being cringe or over the top. Something that is extremely rare.

I watched this when I was a kid living in India and found it funny and 12+ years later with my friend I watched it as a joke, expecting to not laugh and see how much I've outgrown this show. Turns out I was laughing even more. I understood so many more references and the acting is just so brilliant, for a character that basically says nothing, he does it all with his body language alone. He says nothing, instead speaks a language we all understand, the body language. What makes it amazing is that the situation keeps changing, they don't just milk the same joke over and over, they keep doing something new.

I'm not the type of guy who finds many comedy based movies or tv shows or anime funny. Indeed popular comedy tv shows or films just fly over my head. I think the humour is too forced or just cringe and unfunny to a point where the shows main attraction is my main distaste towards it. Plus the show has to rely on characters being the same typical way everytime. It's like they copy each others work and just use the same jokes too. This is probably the only show where I've just watched it and just had a good laugh. Iconic character and iconic show, no matter who you are or where you're from.

The Funniest Series You'll Ever See
Rainey-Dawn19 August 2022
Rowan Atkinson's greatest character role! The funniest series you may ever see. This series is comedy gold! Mr. Bean hardly speaks a word but will have you in stitches with his slapstick sight comedy.

Mr. Bean is a crazy, lazy, bumbling, misfit that will make the best out of the worst situations and the worst out of the best situations. He also loves his Teddy Bear.

Well worth watching for comedy fans!

Love Mr. Bean - clean humor
santamonica111915 August 2022
I can't begin to tell you how much i love Mr. Bean he's the man, and what amazes me, is how he gets out of these incredibly difficult situations, and he is always so creative, plus Robyn Driscoll also deserves accolades!, he is also a genius!. My favorite bit that he has done is the Amazing Adventures of Mr. Bean and while all the rest of them are amazing, this remains my true favorite, plus i wish the show didn't stop so soon!. Each episode is brilliantly written, and they were all masterfully directed, plus Each episode is a classic in my eyes!. This show is incredibly popular, and i can definitely see why, as it's quite possibly the funniest show ever. The character actors all played there roles really well, especially Robyn Driscoll and Matilda Ziegler (as Irma). This is one of my favorite T. V shows of all time Rowan Atkinso is simply put a genius and an incredibly talented comedian (possibly the best!), and it's only fitting that i chose this to be my 1000 review f you haven't seen this show , drop what your doing right now and go check it out.

This was probably the Charlie Chaplin of its time...

it does extra...but that's its trademark...slapstick humour...visual humour...it's all here...

Atkinson's face tells the comedy...it's crazy how he does that...

it's not bad...it will make you laugh.

Rowan Atkinson's most endearing and iconic character.
IonicBreezeMachine28 December 2021
Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) despite being a grown man goes through life in a childlike manner, often intentionally bumbling his way into major mishaps that stem from seemingly mundane and everyday actions most people do on a regular basis.

Created by Atkinson in 1987 (with various prototypes since 1979), Mr. Bean is undeniably the most endearing and well known of the British comedians characters. Taking inspiration from the likes of Jacques Tati, silent film comedians, and Peter Sellers "bumbling fool" archetypes, Mr. Bean operates in a world of minimal dialogue with much of the humor derived from the exaggerated pantomime or physical antics. It's because of the mostly universal nature of physical comedy and slapstick as well as the show's minimal dialogue that the character and the show have had such a far reach with Atkinson himself having experimented with the international viability when he debuted the character on the "French bill" at a Canadian comedy festival in 1987. Mr. Bean's ore concept and appeal is about as simple as a comedy can get, but that makes it no less effective.

At its core the show is a series of vignettes showing Mr. Bean going about his day with the plot always being a variation of "Mr. Bean does blank, what can happen?". Mr. Beans day consists of seemingly ordinary activities like going shopping, doing home repairs, or even going to bed, but with Mr. Bean's penchant for bringing chaos by simply walking out the front door these ordinary activities that you or I do everyday without thought or incident leave wakes of disruption or destruction in their wake with Mr. Bean usually sheepishly trying to avoid the consequences of his actions only to end up making a tiny mistake worse and worse with every "corrective action".

Mr. Bean is pretty basic as far as comedy goes with its style and delivery evocative of the silent film comedy classics, but the show uses its simple premise to deliver strong laughs from everyday life situations that become maelstroms of comedic anarchy once Bean is let loose upon them. Be it riding on the bus, walking through the park, or even simply turning in for the night, regardless of how seemingly simple the setup, Mr. Bean will turn it into a charmingly funny scenario.

A classic which didn't age well
cmelaniesenf21 December 2021
When I was a kid, I loved Mr. Bean and tried to watch these 15 episodes multiple times but never made it through.

With some help from the almighty Amazon, I finally got what I wanted and wish I hadn't. Why?

Because it shattered my illusion.

He represents everything we dislike about others these days. We are "the girlfriend", we dislike the way he's trying to be funny; we dislike the way he treats people including us (girls). We dislike the way he lives; we dislike the way he handles difficult situations. We disapprove of the way he's trying to win us back after realizing (too late) that he might have done something wrong. But what he wouldn't admit.

I'm deeply sorry for turning this into some psychologic review especially as we all know that Mr. Bean should be seen as a comedic character. But fact is, this classic didn't age well.

The epitome of goofy comedy
tinytots212 December 2021
A charming series rich in physical humour, Rowan Atkinson's portrayal of Mr. Bean is now iconic. While simplistic in a story sense, it is another example of how comedy can be successfully created and conveyed in non-verbal fashion. Despite the titular character not being a very nice individual, we as the audience find ourselves rooting for him through all his ludicrous bumbling (mis)adventures even as he leaves a trail of chaos and confusion in his wake.

Mr. Bean is a very British show that can be enjoyed by the entire family. A few of its jokes might miss but by and large, the sketches are funny, wonderfully enacted, and gorgeously depicted and presented. Its unconnected episodic nature allows one to dive in anywhere and amusement is derived even during multiple rewatches.

Very iconic and a series (or character) that is absolutely legendary. Very different humor but Rowan Atkinson is incredible. Nice to watch in between when you have a little bit of time. Some Charlie Chaplin Vibes and both are very iconic. A series that you have to see at some point of your life.

The best comedy show I know
hashi-yo17 August 2021
I'm Japanese, so I'm not good at English, but anyone can understand the fun of Mr. Bean.

I know a lot of Japanese comedies, but they are often vulgar. I hated comedy. However, when I met Mr. Bean and changed my way of thinking. Mr. Bean may also be vulgar and depending on the difference in thinking. But it's an innate vulgarity, no discomfort to me, and I can laugh.

Mr. Bean is a good comedy overall and the best comedy I've ever seen.
