Toyota has re-introduced the Land Cruiser 70 series in Japan. The Land Cruiser 70 series was first launched in 1984 and it was known for its heavy-duty, reliability and durability across the world. The Land Cruiser was originally launched as the Toyota BJ in August 1951 and the Land Cruiser series is now 72 years old. Toyota has sold a total of 11.3 million units in approximately 170 countries.
The new 70 series gets classic styling with a few minor upgrades and it also gets modern technology making it a unique model.
In terms of design, the SUV retains the classic and timeless design with new styling elements such as round LED headlights with DRLs, protruding indicators, a chrome-infused bumper, blocked tail lights, newly designed bigger alloy wheels and much more. It also gets an extra blind spot mirror on the left fender which adds the classic touch.
Moving inside, the Land Cruiser 70 Series features Nubuck and Synthetic Leather upholstery. In terms of features, it gets a 9-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, power windows, semi-digital cluster, steering mounted controls, cruise control, Type-C charging ports, Air-conditioning, ADAS features such as lane departure alert, drive-start control functions, and much more.
The Land Cruiser 70 is based on a robust ladder on frame chassis and will be available with a single engine option. The SUV is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine which puts out 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque, it comes paired with a 6-speed torque converter. For reference, this exact engine also does the job in the Toyota Fortuner and Hilux in India. The SUV also gets a 4x4 system with a low transfer case. Other features include an electronic differential lock, Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control, Hill Start Assist Control, and Downhill Assist Control.
The new Land Cruiser 70 will be manufactured at Toyota's Yoshiwara Plant in Japan. The SUV will be available in a single AX trim and priced at 4,800,000 yen (about Rs 27 lakh at current exchange rates). In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,890 mm in length, 1,870 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm. The SUV has a massive fuel tank capacity of 130 litres.
