Hibiscus tiliaceus L. is the last tree species that has been spread in Riyadh City lately because of its ability of tolerate the harsh environmental conditions and due to the beauty of its large yellow flowers. In the present study, four months old seedlings of Hibiscus tiliaceus were subjected to water stress (through withholding irrigation) and salinity (by increasing salt concentration in the irrigation water). Four treatments were applied to the plants growing in the pots included two levels of watering; every other day (well-watered treatment) and every 5 days (water stress treatment), and two levels of salinity (sodium chloride dissolved in the irrigation water); mainly tap water (0.97 dsm-1)(low salt concentration treatment) and 16 dsm-1 (high salt concentration treatment). The results showed that water stress decreased stem height and diameter, number of branches, total leaf area and specific leaf area. While increasing salt concentration caused decreases in stem height and diameter, number of leaves, total leaf area, leaf dry weight and specific leaf area. Both water stress and high salt concentration treatment resulted in a marked decrease in relative leaf water content and a significant increase in proline content in the leaves of Hibiscus tiliaceus seedlings. These results indicate that this species is tolerant to water and salinity stresses and suits the environmental conditions of Saudi Arabia.

Tourism is the main economic base in Sharm el Sheikh, is booming. However, no fresh water resources are available. Currently groundwater, which is salt in the entire coastal area of this part of the Sinai, is desalinated to produce drinking water. Ridgewood is the major actor in desalination in this area and is currently running four plants in Sharm el Sheikh. Due to increasing demand, the capacity is extended regularly. Desalination is done by RO (reversed osmosis). This process splits the extracted water into about 30% drinking water and 70% so- called brine, which contain all the salts. This salt water is discharged back into the aquifer by means of a number of injection wells. Discharge into the sea is not permitted because of the danger feared for the coral reef ecosystem, which is the basis of the tourist economy. However, three dangers are involved with the method of using the aquifer in this way. First is the very real risk of short-circuiting, in which the injected brine flowing through the aquifer reaches the extraction wells in a limited time. Second problem is that increasing capacity is limited by increasing drawdown, due to which wells and pumps have to be lowered, and more wells have to be installed. Last, there is the risk of pollution of the groundwater by other sources, which may cause the extracted water quality to deteriorate over time, for instance causing increase iron concentrations. In order to analyze the situation systematically, an extended groundwater model was built, that includes flow modeling, solute transport and density of the groundwater. Several pumpage-injection scenarios have been analyzed for El Hadab to examine the groundwater flow and solute transport system and to address the effects of anticipated future demands on the system.
Fresh water is one of the most important and scarcest natural resources around the globe. In Saudi Arabia fresh water shortage for different uses represents one of the main challenges hindering development efforts in the country. As such there is a need to pursue a water demand management policy which should include any measure or initiative that will result in reduction of water usage and/or water demand. This study is intended to explore the potential of proper cropping pattern as a water demand management tool to enhance water and food security in Saudi Arabia. Secondary data were obtained from the ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Electricity and Water. The analyses revealed that existing cropping pattern did not benefit from the relative advantage of different regions in producing different crops. Thus, there is a great potential for enhancing food and water security in Saudi Arabia through altering existing cropping pattern by encouraging production of different crops in the regions that have clear relative advantage in their production i.e. give the highest productivity. For example production of cereals could be concentrated in Jouf and Tabuk areas, while vegetables production in the eastern region and Asser area. Keywords: cropping pattern, irrigation water, scarcity, food security, demand management, relative advantage, Saudi Arabia.
