BACKGROUND. Specific Leaf Area (SLA) is a growth parameter that relates leaf area to dry matter accu-mulation. The aim of this work was to analyse the SLA variation during the crop cycle of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris var. saccharifera L.) depending on sowing time and irrigation treatment. METHOD. In a 4-year experiment in a southern Ital-ian environment (Capitanata plain, Foggia), sugar beet was planted in spring (2 out of 4 years) or au-tumn and given different irrigation regimes: Optimal (100% real evapotranspiration, ETc) and Reduced (60% ETc). Growth analysis (green leaf area, weight, number and size, dry matter of roots, leaves and stems) was performed with a destructive method. RESULTS. The beet SLA variations are expressed main-ly in dry matter accumulation, lower in the spring (short-er crop cycle) than in the autumnal crop, with a higher number of green leaves in spring. Seasonal average val-ues of SLA were 16.7 and 15.1 m 2 kg -1 for spring and autumn sowing, respectively. ...

Effect of Light and Water Supply on Morphological and Physiological Leaf Traits of Red Beet2014 •
Water and light are two important resources for red beet (Beta vulgaris var. conditiva Alef.) survival, growth and yield. Changes in leaf traits can be regarded as indicators for detection of crop responses to environmental stress, and could be utilized to select genotypes suitable for stressed environments. The objectives of the current study were to explore the adaptive changes of morphological and physiological leaf traits of red beet to water and light stress, and identify traits as potential suitable selection indicators in breeding programs. Red beet was treated with RED (red/far red ratio (R/FR): 1.29; transmitted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR): 66.9%), GREEN (R/FR: 0.43; PAR: 25.8%) photo‐selective films, and with two water conditions i.e., 50% of water holding capacity (WHC) (W50) and 30% of WHC (W30). Plants subjected to GREEN had higher specific leaf area (SLA) (248.6 cm2 g−1) and leaf area ratio (LAR) (232.2 cm2 g−1) and lower soil‐plant analysis development (...

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different water levels on the sugar rate, sugar yield and root yield of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) under Kahramanmaras climatic conditions in the production season 1999-2000. A line source sprinkler irrigation system was used with 6 irrigation levels; I1, I2, I3, I4, I5 and I6. The sugar beet row adjacent to the lateral was denoted the most water applied level (I1), and the most remote row from the lateral was denoted the least water applied level (I6). The plant rows between levels I1 and I6 were taken as the deficit irrigation levels in variably decreasing amounts. In the first (1999) and second (2000) years of the experiment, the total amount of irrigation water applied in a season was 1232 mm in 1999 and 1331 mm in 2000, while the amounts of water consumed (Et) were 1446 mm and 1491 mm lively respect. For level I1, sugar rates were 17.2% and 15.1%, sugar yields were 9870 kg ha-1 and 9420 kg ha-1, and root yields were 57 360 ...

Within-field variability of plant and canopy traits of sugar beet and their relation to individual root mass during harvest2020 •
The present study reports on research results obtained in the years 2014–2015 on two sugar beet production plantations in Central Poland. The purpose of any production is to obtain homogeneous canopy with the plants of demanded morphological and qualitative traits. The aim of the research was the assessment of the range and scale of plant variability in sugar beet canopy and impact of investigated plant and canopy traits (number of days from sowing to emergence, development stage of plants in the juvenile period, the plant living area, the location centrality index) to the final root mass at harvest time. Variability of investigated plant and canopy traits was evaluated using the variation coefficient, while the impact of these traits on the final root mass was assessed using the analysis of multiple linear regression. The obtained results show that sugar beet canopy reveals large, within-field variability in the investigated traits. The established relationship between final root m...
