Kingdom Protista

Home The Kingdom Protista is made up of eukaryotic organisms. Most tend to be unicellular, although there are some multicellular protists. Algae is a type of protist, and represent the largest part of the photosynthetic protists. For the most part, the rest are heterotrophic. The protists generally live in aquatic environments. Many have flagella to move around. Protists are also thought of as the ancestors of almost all eukaryotes. The kingdom is also comprised of eukaryotes that don't fit anywhere else.

Phylum Euglenophyta: There are around 900 species of this phylum. The organisms tend to be fresh water organisms, and most are unicellular. They reproduce by cell division.

Phylum Rhizopoda: This phylum contains mainly unicellular organisms that use pseudopods to get around and get food. This group includes amoebas. They reproduce asexually (binary fission).

Phylum Chlorobiont: This phylum contains green algae. There are both unicellular and multicellular Chlorobionts. They are all photosynthetic and are very similar to plants (cell walls, chloroplasts, etc.). So similar in fact, that some biologists think of green algae as plants.

Biodiversity

Amoeba Proteus
Habitat: Live in clear water with a lot of oxygen.
Diet: Eats other protists, including other amoebas by surrounding the food into a vacule.
Other info: Have multiple pseudopodia that they use to move around and get food. They use the pseudopodia to explore the environment as the move. They are very large (almost large enough to see with the naked eye). They are probably the most famous of the amoebas. They are single celled and use vacules for waste management.
