Comic Neue: Comic Sans typeface for grown-ups
The much-maligned Comic Sans typeface gets an overdue remake, rendering it suitable for general consumption.
Comic Sans has long been the butt of jokes within the typeface world. Just say its name and you conjure up images of blaringly obnoxious Web sites from the '90s and brochures that make you want to flee from the companies they're advertising.
Digital designer Craig Rozynski decided it was time to reform Comic Sans, to drag it kicking and screaming into the world of typeface adulthood. Meet Comic Neue, Comic Sans' much more attractive and worldly brother.
"Comic Neue aspires to be the casual script choice for everyone including the typographically savvy," Rozynski writes, "The squashed, wonky, and weird glyphs of Comic Sans have been beaten into shape while maintaining the honesty that made Comic Sans so popular."
The fresh typeface comes in two variants: Comic Neue and Comic Neue Angular. The whole package is available as a free download, so you can start using it right away and no one will suspect you of being a secret Comic Sans fan. It won't completely dull the sting of years of inappropriate Comic Sans use, but it goes a long way toward redeeming a typeface that had become a punch line.
