In Short

  • Supertech’s twin towers in Noida will be demolished at 2:30 pm on August 28.
  • Residents of nearby buildings have been told to move out by 7:30 am that day.
  • More than 3,500 kg of explosives will be used to demolish the illegal building.

With just eight days to go for the demolition of Supertech’s twin towers in Noida, the work to raze the illegally constructed building is in full swing.

The 40-storey building is slated to be demolished at 2.30 pm on August 28 in compliance with a Supreme Court order that found the twin structures in Sector 93A were built in violation of norms. Earlier, the razing was said to have been scheduled for August 21 but it was deferred by a week following Noida Authority's request for an extension.

One of the illegal twin towers, Ceyane, has been completely rigged with explosives. The work on the other, taller tower -- Apex -- is underway. More than 3,500 kg of explosives will be filled in around 9,400 holes drilled in the columns and shears of the skeletal structures of the twin towers to bring it crashing down.

All necessary measures to prevent damage to the nearby buildings are being taken up, Edifice Engineering said. "The building will collapse like water," said one engineer.

EVACUATION PROTOCOL

Over 5,000 residents of the nearby Emerald Court and ATS Village societies have been told to vacate the premises by 7.30 am on August 28. They can return after 4 pm only with safety clearance from Edifice Engineering, the agency tasked with the demolition of the 100-metre tall building.

Around 1,200 vehicles belonging to residents of the two housing societies will also be removed from the premises for the period. The Noida Authority will provide space for them in the multilevel parking facility at Botanical Garden metro station, an official told PTI.

SAFETY MEASURES IN PLACE

The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, which is close to the twin towers, will remain shut for vehicular movement from 2.15 pm to 2.45 pm on August 28.

Entry of people, vehicles and animals will be restricted in the close proximity area -- known as exclusion zone -- of the twin towers on the appointed day.

Uktarsh Mehta, partner with Edifice Engineering said, “We have had a series of meetings with the nearby residents and they are satisfied with the safety measures we are taking. We have installed nets, cloth and perimeter curtains to provide three layers of safety from the dust and debris to the nearby buildings. Any debris will be arrested by either of three layers. Any stray debris will be caught by the geotextiles being installed between the buildings.”

He further said that trenches are being dug at the perimeter to prevent any damage to the nearby building through the shockwave of the explosion. Containers are also being placed between the twin towers and the nearby buildings for extra safety.

The road in front of the twin towers has been closed for regular traffic since last Saturday, officials had said. Moreover, additional security personnel have been deployed in the area that will be under constant police monitoring till August 28.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DEMOLITION?

On post-demolition debris management, a Noida Authority official said "35,000 cubic metres of rubble" is expected to be left in the aftermath of the demolition. "Of this, 6,000 to 7,000 cubic metres would gather in the basement of twin towers," the official added.

Meanwhile, the plan for debris management was yet to be finalised as the regional pollution control board was examining the proposal sent by Edifice Engineering, reported PTI citing sources. The plan is expected to be finalised in a day or two.
