A furious British holidaymaker has branded a popular seaside town on the south coast the 'worst in England' - and said it 'makes Blackpool look like heaven'. The Devon coast is is one of the top staycation destinations for Brits, with thousands of tourists holidaying in the likes of Torquay each summer.

The coastal town, with average summer temperatures of 21C highs, is home to picturesque beaches and quaint surrounding villages. But one less than impressed visitor to Torquay, known as Peter G, took to Tripadvisor to leave a harsh review about the 'rough' location, DevonLive reports.

He even controversially went as far as to say that the town, with a population of 52,000 people, 'makes Blackpool look like heaven' after his underwhelming visit to the area.

Peter G's full review reads: “Wow! What a dump. And people think Blackpool's bad. Torquay is a dirty, rough, horrible nasty dump full of drug addicts and empty buildings. Undoubtedly the worst seaside town in England." He added that the harbour was 'grotty', but fellow tourists don't necessarily seem to agree with him.

While Peter G didn't pull any punches with the deeply negative review of the town, Torquay is undeniably a tourist hotspot, with the English Riviera Airshow pulling in thousands over one weekend alone. It also has an impressive overall rating on Tripadvisor of 4.5 out of five stars with 685 reviews.

Torquay and the wider South Devon area has been praised countless times and even named as one of the top holiday destinations for Brits looking for a UK getaway. Torquay boasts numerous tourist attractions, including Kents Cavern, and Britain's most important Stone Age site. Despite struggles over the years to transform its image with locals, Torquay has been dubbed 'British Turkey'.

Torquay is known for awesome beaches such as Babbacombe and cliffside Oddicombe and the bustling Torquay Harbour near the town centre offers shops, cafes and a marina.

With its iconic palm trees, busy harbour, international marina, sandy beach and huge selection of continental cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars, it's unsurprising that rich Brits are snapping up second homes in the area, while tens of thousands of Brits continue to visit the town each summer.
