The Faroe Islands are a small archipelago of 18 rugged and rocky islands north of the United Kingdom and southwest of Iceland. The island group is an autonomous country and one of the three countries constituting the Kingdom of Denmark. The islands are the peaks of a submarine hogback in the Norway Basin. With an area of 1,393 km², the Faroe Islands are slightly larger than half the size of Luxemburg, or slightly smaller than one-third of Rhode Island.
