When this health service started with a general doctor, he provided the preventive and curative health service to the parents to treat them from diseases and give them the necessary vaccinations against smallpox, cholera and typhoid. He was appointed the first director of health in the region in 1362H to supervise health work in Asir region.

In the beginning of the seventies and specifically in 1371 e was the first Ministry of Health has been appointed by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and was an effective start to develop and expand health services throughout the Kingdom, including the southern region.

The first hospital in Abha was opened on Friday, 1372/8/24, with about thirty beds opening officially and opened several auxiliary sections and warehouses for furniture and machinery for distribution to health facilities in the region in Jazan, Najran, Qunfazah, Dhahran South and others. On 1373/8/15 AH, preventive services developed from vaccinations and control of communicable diseases. The construction of the Abha General Hospital began in 1374 AH and was opened in early 1378 AH with a capacity of 50 beds. The number of beds increased to 60 beds. As a result, the health service has steadily increased and expanded in the 1990s and over the ten years of the years 1381 to 1390H. The number of hospitals in the region, clinics, car units, health points, manpower, expenses, medicines, machinery, furniture and equipment increased.

Six new hospitals are currently under construction with a total capacity of 1200 beds, Abha Hospital for women and obstetrics with 200 beds, one hospital with a capacity of 100 beds, a maternity hospital in Khamis Mushait with 200 beds, (200 beds), Sabet Al Olaya Hospital (100 beds) and 120 new health centers instead of rented buildings.
