Venice lights Rialto Bridge in colours of Italian flag

Venice landmark will be illuminated until end of Coronavirus emergency.

The Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, has been illuminated in the green, white and red colours of the Italian tricolour, in solidarity with its residents and healthcare workers on the front line in the battle against Coronavirus.

Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the lighting of Ponte di Rialto on 16 April as a "gesture of hope" that will be repeated every night until the end of the Covid-19 emergency.

"Venice is a resilient city that shows that it wants to look to the future with confidence," said Brugnaro, adding that each of the town hall buildings in the lagoon city would also be illuminated with the colours of the Italian flag.

One of the main landmarks in Venice, the Rialto Bridge connects the districts of S. Marco and S. Polo, and has been rebuilt several times since its first construction in 1173.
