Visiting Petronas towers while you are in Malaysia’s capital is one of the top 10 things to do in Kuala Lumpur as we have already mentioned. Before you go through, you should aware of a couple of things regarding this magnificent architecture and construction highlight.
The construction of Petronas Tower
The construction of the skyscrapers took three and a half years and was built from two contractors. Tower 1 was constructed by Japanese Hazama and Tower 2 by South Korean Samsung Corporation.
They are based in a slab of 13200 cubic meters concrete and 30 meters deep foundations. There are 30 lifts available in total. Twenty high-speed double-decker lifts, six for utilities and four for executive services.
Tallest building for 8 years
When the construction finished in 1996, Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. This until 2004 when the Japanese took the baton with Taipei 101.
Petronas tower height is 451.9m (1483 ft.) and they were built using “tube in tube” design. The cost was $1.6 billion and the owner is KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd. Maybe they lost the first place regarding the tallest building but they are still the tallest “Twin Towers” in the world.
The architecture of Petronas Towers
The Islamic symbols are quite noticeable in both interior and exterior areas of the Petronas Towers. The Qutb Minar probably inspired Argentine architect César Pelli who designed the Towers.
The sky bridge at 41st level, which connects the two buildings, is actually part of an evacuation plan. It is not fully connected with the towers as both of them sway in every direction.
The “M” shape of the bridge comes from Malaysia’s first letter but also from the traditional basket weaving method.
The ‘Spiderman’ Alain Robert
In 2009, the French Alain Robert, known as “The Human Spider” succeed to climb to the top of Petronas Towers without any safety equipment. That was his 3rd attempt as in the previous times, 1997 and 2007, was caught on the 66th floor.

- Petrosains center is an absolute must when you are in the are of the Petronas Towers. It is located on the 4th floor of the KLCC shopping center and with 25 RM and is the best place if you are into physics and chemistry!
Tickets and Operating hours
The Towers are open on a daily basis except for Mondays, they stay open from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm and the last lift for visitors is at 8.30 pm.
