As I did not find too many user reviews nor any guides on setup issues for this device while I was looking for a Chromebook, writing this review after a couple of weeks of usage. Bought on sale during new year. Considering all features in a well rounded way, this could arguably be the best Chromebook available currently in the Indian market.
*** Notes on initial setup issues: It comes with an older version of ChromeOS. For setup and upgrading to the latest version, it gave an error message that it will not setup or update using a metered network i.e. mobile hotspot or inbuilt 4G LTE, but needs WiFi. However, it allowed to browse the internet via hotspot in Guest mode. After about 4 hours of being continuously on while I was searching for a solution and testing general hardware of the device, it upgraded on its own and went ahead with the setup - might be updating in the background. It upgraded 2 times to reach the latest version. Inbuilt cameras and card reader did not work (for some older micro-sd cards) but after upgrade both started working. USI pen was not working for 2 days though the system was detecting it when attached to the side. System was showing it was charging but when we detach to use it, it did not actually have any charge and was not working. I suppose its battery was very weak as it was packed a few months ago. It started working after 2 days attached to the side and charging.
*** Below are some of the features which I considered and my related experiences.
1) Arm processor: new computing platform for a laptop with better battery life. Processor is older generation but the device is tuned for ChromeOS and works generally fast. Slightly slows down and gets slightly warm on heavy usage though not a problem.
2) Battery Life: I get about 11 to 12 hours of mix usage with about 25% brightness. It is using less battery while playing videos stored locally on the device - hence battery would last still more. Charges fast - full in about 1.5 hours.
3) Screen: It has a 2k screen - probably the highest resolution among all Chromebooks in the market currently in India. It's very crisp, sharp with very good brightness. However, I noticed that if I watch videos at close range without spectacles, eyes become dry after some time - unlike my MacBook where I do not feel any discomfort. However, this may be similar for all non-Apple devices and besides normally we are always at a distance from the screen and there is no discomfort. 11 inch is a good form factor for portability and high resolution allows websites / apps to adjust properly. Touch response is very good. If fingers are used directly, it needs daily / alternate days cleaning for smudges as they become quite visible. Border width is sufficient in tablet mode though occasionally thumb / palm touches on to the screen at the borders while holding and clicks something inadvertently.
4) Memory and Storage: considering that it is meant for online work, 8GB RAM with 128 GB eMMC is a good combination, also considering future enhancements and improvements to ChromeOS - updates till Jun 2029 - which may require more memory. For general work, I did not find eMMC slow except sometimes copying big files to and from external hard disk, compared to SSD.
5) USI Pen: Charges fast but only when the machine is on. Different experience compared to a mouse. Good for writing / signing / drawing apart from general screen UI interaction. Responds well but needs to be almost vertical or at less angles, else it does not register. Sticks to side magnet strongly without fear of falling off or loosing it. Though a design of compartment for it would have been better.
6) Audio - Front facing speakers are quite loud and clear. Branded - Bang & Olufsen.
7) Cameras: average - not for photography but good enough for video calls.
8) Inbuilt 4G LTE, Micro SD card reader, Fingerprint sensor: were not critical for me but all work very well and are useful.
9) USB C: good to have 2 ports though would have been better on opposite sides rather than on the same for convenience of charging via either side. Can charge or transfer data through any port and external hard disk works very well with a converter.
10) 2 in 1: got used to it in a few days coming from a traditional clamshell laptop. Magnetic keyboard and back stand are strong and automatically get attached in place. Back stand folding edge is protruding rather than embedded but not a bother for me. You feel some weight when eveything is attached as compared to only tablet but not too heavy.
11) Android and Linux: Did some basic testing with apps from both and they work well. Haven't done performance testing as I use the device mainly for online apps and consumption, but considering the general specs and fast ChromeOS improvements, it should handle regular apps well.
*** Overall, a solid device and as I wrote earlier, considering all features in a well rounded way, this could arguably be the best Chromebook available currently in the Indian market.
