Giant, inflatable bubbles have arrived in downtown Milwaukee.

"Evanescent," by Atelier Sisu, an internationally touring "art-chitecture" installation, is headlining "Rainbow Summer: HIGHLIGHT featuring 'Evanescent' " this week. The display features an immersive light and sound environment, according to a news release.

The artwork consists of three sets of four bubbles each — three on the ground and one above at the center connecting them.

The bubbles are made from a color-reflecting dichroic film that reacts to the changing sunlight, the news release said. This causes a "rainbow of reflection across the ground and a unique picture from every angle."

Here's how, when and where to see the display.

Where the bubble art installation is located

“Evanescent," which has a total footprint of more than 1,400 square yards, is located on the Marcus Performing Arts Center outdoor grounds, 929 N. Water Street.

How, when to see the bubble art installation

"Rainbow Summer: HIGHLIGHT featuring 'Evanescent," which is free to attend, runs July 18-22.

A woman takes a photo of the Evanescent bubble exhibit outside the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee on Monday, July 17, 2023. The exhibit consists of three sets of four bubbles each made from a color-reflecting material that reacts to the changing light of the sun as it moves across the sky.

What the bubble art installation is like

When we stopped by the display Monday, the sets of bubbles were gently swaying in the breeze. They looked whimsical, iridescent and somewhat translucent in the afternoon sunlight.

Adults and children alike were moving from cluster to cluster and snapping photos in and around them.

Each set of bubbles has three entry points. When you step inside, you see one bubble above you and three around you, separated by gaps.

While inside, you can still make out clouds, trees and buildings through the colorful film. Depending on which way you're facing, you can see other sets of bubbles through some of the spaces.

'Be gentle' when visiting the display

"Please be gentle," signs around "Evanescent" say. Attendees are not to kick, tackle or punch the artwork.

Children must be supervised, according to the signs.
